Flower lovers are in for another annual treat next month as Pyin Oo Lwin’s Flower Festival will be opened on 15 Dec 2018. Pyin Oo Lwin is a scenic hill town in Mandalay region, known as a cool summer retreat, remains balmy all year round and is located in the Shan Highland, some 67 km east of Mandalay and at an altitude of 1,070 meters.
The festival will be held from December 15 to January 15 at Kandawgyi Gardens.
The National Kandawgyi Botanical Garden was founded in 1915. This lovingly maintained 435-acre botanical garden features more than 480 species of flowers, shrubs and trees.
To celebrate the flower festival, the authority is decorating and preparing the flowers at the garden. They are also planning to sell souvenir items including sweaters and warm clothes, local products, handicrafts and other products. The festival will display more than 130,000 foreign flower species, artificial flowers and local flower species.
The 437-acre garden (172 hectares) received millions of visitors last December. The entrance fee charged during the festival period was Ks1,000 per adult, Ks500 per child and US$5 each for foreigners.
Last year’s flower festival attracted millions of visitors, according to the report. Officials expect that this year’s flower festival will draw more visitors.
Since June, this year, the flowers are grown for the festival. Now it is about 80 per cent complete.
Travellers will also have a chance to explore the city itself, established as a colonial enclave in the early 20th century. Plenty of Christian churches and Muslim mosques testify to the peaceful diversity that has existed ever since.
